Another Quirky Variant: Try Omaha Poker and Win

Poker has so many variations that it’s hard to keep track of them all. Even the most experienced of players probably haven’t played them all by now, as new forms of the game seem to be made on a yearly basis.

So here’s yet another one to keep track of: Omaha Poker. Don’t worry, though: it’s easy to get used to Omaha Poker if you practice online for a while and get the hang of its various intricacies. Since it’s one of the more popular variants Omaha Poker programs should be pretty easy to track down online and play for free.

If you’ve played Texas Hold’Em – and what poker player hasn’t played Texas Hold’Em? – then you’ll pick up on Omaha really quickly. The gameplay is essentially the same, though with one crucial difference regarding the cards you use.

Each player is dealt four cards from the outset. These are your hole cards. Then five cards are played to the center of the table. These are community pool cards. The trick of Omaha games of poker is to use two of your hole cards in combination with three of the community cards. No more of each set and no less. Once you reach a showdown the player with the best combination of both sets of cards to form a poker hand (the same hands as those available in Texas Hold’Em) wins.

Not every community card is played at once, though. Like Hold’Em the dealer plays out three community cards after players have made their initial bets. After these bets are completed another card, the turn, is played. Another round of betting ensues. Any players left after this get one final card, known as the river. One final round of betting ensues after that, and the remaining players at the end of this poker betting show their Omaha hands. The player with the best hand is decreed the winner.

It’s essential – especially for old players – to keep in mind that your combination must be two hole cards and three community cards. No other combination will count towards your final hand.
