Poker Casino: A Game of Skill or Chance?
Poker casino is a complex game. In a casino much of the success is weighed on the skill of the player and little credit is given to luck or chance. This theory is based on the previous success of legendary poker players like Johny Moss who won three championships in 1970, 71, and 74. Johny Moss is not the only poker player that has been able to do such a feat. There was also Stew Ungar, who won in 1980, 81 and then again in 1997. It seems that if the game was based mainly off of chance, their years of success would be more random.
Because of the skill needed to be a successful poker player, the poker players of the world are trying to have poker separated from other gambling games. It is thought by the state and other officials that poker should be listed in the same category as roulette or even slot machines where luck really does need to be on your side. Poker players want poker casino to be viewed more as a sport at which the top players can excel due to their knowledge and skill. They would like to see poker listed with such games as chess.
The process to see poker listed as a skill game has just begun. This process has been supported by the casino and several well appoint officials. Congressman Robert Wexler introduced legislation into the House in June 2007 to have poker listed as a game of skill rather than lumped with the other casino games of chance like roulette. In his legislation “Skill Game Protection Act” poker would be lumped together with chess, and bridge. Both of these games are already seen as games of skill. Senator Alfonse D'Amato is on the Congressman's side he too has fought to have this casino game recognized as it should be.
Poker Casino is a very successful business. In 2006 poker rooms not associated with a casino brought in 1 million dollars in profits. Poker players would like to have poker seen as the sport that it truly is.
