Rules of Poker: As simple as they sound?

The rules of poker are simple to learn, this is true. But when you say the rules of poker, what exactly are you talking about? Do you mean Texas Hold’Em? Or Omaha? Or Maybe Five Card Stud? Which variation is it?

In fact there are numerous sets o’ rules of poker. It’s to your advantage not necessarily to know them all, but rather to learn which one you can play the best. The rules for any of them are relatively easy to learn as long as you’re willing to apply yourself a bit. Want to learn some of these rules? Then read on, and discover.

Texas Hold’Em: Probably the most commonly played variant of the poker game, Texas Hold’Em features a strong community component in its rules. Each poker player is given two cards, known as their hole cards, and then through progressive rounds of betting five more cards are played into a community pool at the centre of the table. Players base their ultimate hands both on the pool and on what they have in their own hand. Through several hands o’ betting and folding the players ultimately come to the final showdown, where players may even opt to go “all in” and risk the sum o’ their chips on their hand being the superior.

Five Card Stud: Each player is given two cards at the start, one face up and the other face down. The player with the lowest card showing bets first to start the game. Play then proceeds clockwise around the table (or room, if played online) with players betting or folding in turn. Cards continue to be dealt until each player has five cards total. Once the fourth card is given out the original bet is doubled.

Omaha: Omaha High Low poker is unusual in that the pot is rewarded to two players, not one. The player is required to use two cards from their hand and three from the board – exactly those combinations o’ cards – to win. The player with the worst hand and the player with the best split the winnings.
