Three Card Poker is the Doorway to the Rest

Ever heard of three card poker? Perhaps, and perhaps not. It’s yet another family member in the legions of poker variants that exist on the market today. And though it does play similarly to other poker variants, it’s also fairly unique in that you only play, as the name suggests, with three cards. Want to try it out? Find a free version of the game online, get each card in turn, and see if you can beat a computer player.

Want to learn how to play three card poker? Then you’ve come to the right place. The variant that features not one card, not two card but three is pretty easy to learn if you pay attention to the following rules. Three card poker involves the following, and little of it is based on strategy (thus making it a good game for beginners to the world of poker):

  • First, you’re given three cards. No brainer there.
  • Based on these three cards you have to decide whether you want to fold or raise. The dealer is also given three cards, and the object of the game is to have better cards than the dealer (bear in mind that the dealer must typically have a queen or better hand or they’re forced to fold, regardless of how bad your hand might be).
  • If you fold then play ends and you move to a new round. If not you bet however much you want.
  • You then show your cards to the dealer. If your hand is higher then, obviously, you win. If the dealer has a higher hand then you’ll lose the pot and have to start over from scratch.
  • Pretty simple, eh? Unfortunately it’s so simple that there’s not much strategy involved; it only comes into play when you’re deciding whether or not to fold. It’s generally recommended that you fold unless you have a hand with a jack or higher (higher being any of the other high cards, a straight, a flush or pairs).
  • Try it online. There’s not much risk to just sampling, right?
